The P23.3-billion North Luzon Expressway (NLEX)-South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) Connector Road started preliminary works on Thursday.

Officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Department of Finance (DoF) and NLEX Corp. attended the groundbreaking rites in Caloocan City.

Actual construction would begin in April, NLEX Corp. President Luigi Bautista told reporters.
According to the DPWH, the project is “an eight-kilometer all elevated 4-lane toll expressway extending the NLEX southward from the end of Segment 10 in C3 Road Caloocan City to PUP Sta. Mesa, Manila and connecting to the Skyway Stage 3, and mostly traversing the PNR rail track. The project includes two interchanges located at C3 Road, Caloocan and España, Manila.”

Once completed, the project will cut travel time between NLEX and SLEX from two hours to 20 minutes.

The elevated road is also expected to ease traffic woes and cater to about 35,000 motorists per day.

The main line of NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 was also inaugurated on Thursday. It is an elevated expressway traversing the NLEX from MacArthur Highway in Karuhutan, Valenzuela City, passing through Malabon City and C3 Road in Caloocan City.

“NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 and NLEX Connector are just some of Metro Pacific’s expansion projects geared towards providing further convenience to motorists and bringing more opportunities in nearby cities and provinces,” said Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer Rodrigo Franco.
